I finally threw out the assortment of toothbrushes from my house today. Some were red, some were blue, some yellowing with neglect. Caked and dry like fossils. Their owners have moved on. To different addresses. To different arms. To different morning smells.
I stared at them for awhile before I threw them out. I have been saving them. Half-hoping that one day someone will be back and be comforted by a resident familiarity. Exactly at the same angle.
But a toothbrush is the easiest thing to replace in the world.

great post. good ending. and it reminds me that i need to buy a new toothbrush.
and a toothbrush does seem like the easiest thing to mark a place as home and the easiest to leave behind.
"Got a toothbrush? We're going to London."
Do you know which movie this is from? :)
You've just made millions of homeless beings - the germ colonies living in the toothbrushes ;)
your post made me write this...
"whats left after people move on,
a toothbrush and some songs"
on another note, as an answer to your comment, ive put up a list of directore whose work one can look forward to...might like to add.
cheers!
roark - thank you. and as always you are absolutely correct about using a toothbrush being used to mark territory.
scribbleamus - snatch? dennis farina...is it not
devil mood - ah. the unbearable lightness of being.
meraj - yup. did read. will pick up some dvds from you when you don't mind.
The trick to remember the next time round is you have the power to stay over elsewhere, leave YOUR brush there and split. Let THEM handle the leftover feelings. Who knows, the whole business of life-is-so-bleak-isn't-it might even go away for a while.
the unbearable lightness of being -
......toothbrushes -
if only it were that easy -
a simple toss....
Hi...
Thank you...
I followed you over to your part of the world...
I completely identified with Mouthwash...
I still keep the toothbrushes of all the important lovers I've ever had, and I shudder to think how many toothbrushes with tiny pieces of me there are in other people's homes...
There are even times when I've gone back to reclaim mine... :-)
easy as it can get. great opst. woah!
Ouch.!!!
For some reason I completely identify with this. Reminds me of my toothbrush at my parents place..it just lies there waiting for me to stay over.
just to give you an idea for future toothbrushes: i use old ones to clean between the tiles. It's hard work only toothbrushes do well. And it gives a sense of satisfaction if the toothbrush belongs to an old flame. :)
da producer - your tangents, as always look at the brighter side of life.
maddie - alas. but there's comfort in pain.
deeptibose - i hope you enjoyed your short stay here. will hop over to yours soon enough.
dharmabum - thanks man. keep dropping in.
jolvin rodrigues - ah. the familiar smell of your parents house...been awhile.
chloe - lol. next time i will save a few. thanks a ton...home improvement here i come.
How can you write like that? How can anyone? I have left mine somewhere too. I cannot retrieve it back.
I am to blame, I guess. This is just so right. What you have written.
Ouch! That is harsh.
As a piece of writing, this one's brilliant. As a piece of emoting, ditto.
